PROGRAM:

FOOD for PROGRESS; Advancing Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security in, Kenya

The FOOD for PROgress (FOODPRO) Program, led by Mtuals Foundation Inc., is a holistic agricultural development initiative designed to improve food security, climate resilience, and rural livelihoods in Kitui County, Kenya. This proposal aligns directly with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food for Progress Program by aiming to increase agricultural productivity and foster trade and market systems in a climate-vulnerable region.

Kenya, a nation with medium human development, aims to achieve middle-income status by 2030. However, it remains off track with over 50% of its population under 20 and higher education access at just 10–15%. In Kitui County, recurrent droughts and degraded soils have severely undermined food security and livelihoods (Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, 2023).

Against this backdrop, the FOOD for PROgress (FOODPRO) initiative focuses on Kitui County to enhance food and nutritional security, improve rural livelihoods, and build climate resilience through a market-driven, sustainable agricultural transformation.

The FOODPRO Project in Mumoni, Kitui County, Kenya, is designed to be a transformative, multistakeholder agricultural initiative to advance sustainable food production, inclusive markets, financial inclusion, local capacity, nutrition, and innovation ecosystems. Its primary objective is to increase farm resilience and economic opportunities for rural populations in a context of worsening climate variability.

The initiative is built on six core objectives with associated activities following an integrated systems-based design model. Implementation will follow inclusive, data-driven methodologies, engage multi-level partners, and utilize existing community structures to scale innovations and drive sustainability. These strategies will ensure systemic impact across agricultural productivity, value chains, governance, and institutional knowledge.

Progress will be monitored through robust quantitative and qualitative indicators, such as acreage restored, volumes aggregated, household incomes improved, gender inclusion rates, and youth employment created, which will be captured under a real-time M&E framework, including an Annual Performance Plan (APP).
